Andrew Scott Caves Obituary - Visitation & Funeral Information

Andrew Scott Caves was born August 30, 1985 to Brian & Patricia Caves in Fairfax County, Virginia. He began his education at St. Francis Catholic School in Triangle, Virginia. In 1997 the family, now including brother, Erik, moved to Jacksonville where Andrew attended St. Joseph’s Catholic School until 8th grade. As a little boy Andrew loved nature, dogs, dinosaurs, and making people smile. These early favorites foretold the future of Andrew’s involvement with the Boy Scouts of America. In 2004 he advanced to the rank of Eagle Scout after earning 26 Merit Badges and being inducted into The Order of the Arrow. That same year Andrew graduated from Mandarin High School. Andrew went on to work three summers at Sea Base, a Boy Scout National High Adventure Camp located in the Florida Keys. Andrew earned an Associate’s Degree from Florida State College at Jacksonville and worked a variety of jobs. He was very passionate about anything with an engine, especially cars, motorcycles, and boats. In 2014 Andrew discovered what he wanted his lifelong career to be when he became an Auto Technician at Tires Plus. He had hopes of furthering his education and training to become a Master Mechanic. In 2013 Andrew met his future bride, Melissa “Missy” Hunter, via an online dating site. They connected over their shared love of Disney and in the first month of dating took a weekend trip to enjoy the Orlando parks. Andrew and Missy were able to visit “The Happiest Place on Earth” almost every month and Andrew selected it as the site of his marriage proposal in March 2015. A few months later, they became “parents” to their first fur-baby Stanley. In 2017, their second fur-baby Stella came along to complete the household. In May 2016, just two months before their wedding ceremony, Andrew was suddenly diagnosed with a Grade II Astrocytoma (brain tumor.) Over the next five years Andrew, Missy, and the rest of the family found strength to navigate his journey of treatments, surgeries, and unimaginable struggles through the power of prayer and tremendous support from family and friends (near and far.) Health complications stopped him from driving and working in February 2018, but Andrew remained able to travel, go bowling, willing to experience new things, and he never lost his sense of humor. Andrew was proud to participate in, and represent, organizations such as The Brain Tumor Network, Live For Today, and Waves of Gray which help to support and advocate for patients with cancer, along with raising research funds to find a cure. Andrew went to God on December 29, 2021 while under the care of Community Hospice at Baptist South Hospital. He was surrounded by loved ones who were engaged in boisterous story telling and laughter about his well-lived life, as he certainly would have wanted. Missy had her hand placed on Andrew’s chest when he took his final breath. Andrew is also survived by his parents Brian & Pat, brother Erik, and sister-in-law Natalie (nee Comeaux.)
