Constance "Connie" M. Lewis
September 18, 1925 - April 20, 2021
Connie passed away peacefully with her nieces by her side in St Augustine, FL. She was 95 years of age. Her beloved husband Will passed away one year ago, almost to the day. Born in Somerville MA to Concetta and Antonio Allegra, she was one of four children and two cousins who grew up in Dedham MA. Connie worked in medical bill collection and office management until she was 93. Connie leaves behind her brother John Allegra and his wife Florence (Randy) of Melbourne FL. She is predeceased by her sister Barbara Gorham and her spouse Bill, of Braintree MA, and her sister Madeline Fucile and her spouse Dominic, of Weymouth MA. Connie and Will were a great love story. They married in 1955 and lived in South Weymouth MA for 42 years before settling in St Augustine FL. They met at a dance and loved to dance well into their 90s. Connie always had a dance card that was full, oftentimes telling nephews and friends to get in line at weddings. Although Connie had no children of her own, she had many nieces, nephews, Godchildren, and grandnieces and nephews, some of whom called her every day and came to visit from around the country. She golfed with them, conjured up great "lobstah suppahs" for them, looked forward to visits with them, and even made wine with them. She was very proud that her wedding dress was worn by one of her nieces and then one of her grandnieces. But most of all, Connie was incredibly devoted to Will, who was the love of her life. Connie's pre Florida years were filled with friends and family, playing cards, and a passion for golf. At the height of her game, she and Will were Massachusetts State Husband and Wife Golf Champions. Though of modest means, Connie and Will were incredibly generous and dedicated to those they loved. Connie selflessly spent years helping to take care of her younger sister Barbara, who battled cancer. In Florida there was more golf, great parties and friends. When Connie was in her eighties, still working part time, she convinced her boss to let her hire an assistant who was fifteen years her younger. She and Connie became BFFs and loved working together, throwing office parties, golfing, shopping and swimming. Connie adored her Poncie golf friends, who kept her on the course until she was 94. Connie was fondly referred to as The General by some of her family and friends. She always had a take-charge spirit and was full of fun and energy. Her last year was tough with the passing of her beloved Will, a broken hip, the loss of her sister Madeline and the dreaded isolation of Covid. But in typical Connie style, she insisted on eating two lobstah rolls for lunch the day before she died. She was loved by so many friends and family members who are comforted that she is again with Will. She will be sorely missed. A celebration of Connie and Will's lives will be held on Wednesday May 12th at 11:30 at Craig Memorial Park, 2600 Old Moultrie Road in St Augustine, FL for friends to say goodbye and send Will and Connie on their final journey. In lieu of flowers, if you would like, please consider a donation in Connie's memory to support the First Tee or your local Caddy scholarship fund. Connie would like that.
