Frances Schar

June 15, 1931 - August 20, 2020

Frances Schar was born in Hannibal, Missouri, June 15, 1931. The family moved to Galesburg, Illinois, where Fran graduated from high school, then attended University of Illinois. She subsequently was a graduate of Chicago School of Interior Design. Her dream came true when she was chosen to be a stewardess for American Airlines in 1951. In 1953 she married Clancy Schar, an American Airlines pilot. They had two sons, Mark and Kurt, and the family lived in Alexandria, Virginia, until 1963 when they moved to the Chicago area. Fran worked as an interior designer for John M Smyth, then opened her own design business. In 1975 the family moved to San Diego, California, where Fran was Department Head of the interior design program for American Business College. She also was graduated from National University, San Diego, with a Bachelor of Business Administration degree. In 1980 Fran and Clancy moved to Sanibel Island, FL. There she established a consulting firm for community associations and management and wrote "Condo Living", a weekly column for the Fort Myers News Press for five years. Clancy contributed the cartoons. She served on a Florida State board pertaining to the Community Association Institute. She also taught interior design and associations management for the continuing education program at Edison State College in Fort Myers. In 1992 in retirement, Fran and Clancy moved to St.Augustine. Fran enjoyed writing and organized five St.Augustine Annual Writer's Conferences. She had five books published and numerous magazine articles published. She was a volunteer for Emma, Habitat for Humanity, library attendant at the Lightner Museum and her most fulfilling activity: an RSVP volunteer reader for Mrs. Casey's and Mrs. Walker's kindergarten classes for 15 years. Fran was a founding member of the St.Augustine chapter of the Kiwi Club (former AAL stewardesses) and the Birth Stars Club. She was a past president of the Marsh Creek Women's Association. She is survived by a son Mark Schar and two grandsons Thomas and John of Palo Alto, California. She was preceded in death by her son Kurt and her husband of 60 years, Clancy Schar. A private service will be held at a later date with burial at sea.
