Retired U.S. Air Force Colonel Jack “Shack” Barnes succumbed to heart disease Sunday afternoon at Flagler hospital in St. Augustine Florida at the age of 72. Jack was born in Ft. Lauderdale Florida to John and Doris Barnes. He graduated from Ft. Lauderdale High School and headed out to conquer the world. He enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in 1971 and after graduating with a Bachelor of Science from Troy State University he was commissioned as a distinguished graduate of Officer Training School in 1975. As education was one of his core values, Jack was awarded his Master of Science degree from the University of Southern California in 1981. Jack traveled the world as a U.S. Air Force officer. He flew the F-4E throughout the Pacific in the early years of his career. He loved to fly. Jack fathered three daughters during his time in the military. He loved them dearly and even when supporting his girls meant being separated from them, he sacrificed his heart to do what was right. At the time of his retirement he was the director of the Force Protection Program, providing technical support to the Chairman, Joint Chiefs of Staff on Anti-terrorism and Force Protection at the Pentagon. After his years of travel in the service, Jack moved back to his home state of Florida to be near the family he adored and his second love, the ocean. He was an avid tournament fisherman and jumped at every opportunity to take his children, and grandchildren fishing. Jack was a generous man. Aside from donations to charities and organizations, he volunteered for a local non-profit, making food deliveries to the elderly. He enjoyed taking veterans out on his boat for fishing tournaments and he never hesitated to lend a hand to those in need. Jack was preceded in death by his beloved parents, and his brothers-in-law Tom LoCasale and Barry Lewis. He is survived by his wife, Susan Barnes; His three daughters, Candice Sanchez, Michelle (Tom) Hancock, Tracy (Tom) Tapley; His three sisters, Barbara Barnes LoCasale, Brenda (Bill) Barnes Lipscomb, Cathy Barnes; 6 Grandchildren; nieces, nephews, great-nieces &nephews. In lieu of flowers please send donations to Jack’s alma mater https://keck.usc.edu/cardiovascular-medicine-division/support-us/ to help fund cardiac research.
