Ray retired from CSX as the Assistant Vice President of Coal and Grain in 2008 after 32 years with the company. He is preceded in death by his Mother Anna Skaggs Griffith, Father Raymond Griffith, 3 sisters Janice, Thomasine, Chrissy, 1 brother William Floyd and nephew McDouglas Whicker, Jr. He leaves behind his beloved wife of 47 years Donna Justice Griffith and 2 children, daughter Cindy Leeber (Dave) and son Raymond Douglas Griffith (Jill). Ray has 4 grandchildren, Trey and Raychel Leeber, Rylee and Riggs Griffith, along with several nieces and nephews that he loved dearly. Ray was a devoted Christian and was a member of the Church of Christ for over 60 years. His strong Faith in God was evident in everything that he did. Ray served in the United States Army for 2 years and then attended Morehead State University earning a Bachelor's Degree in Political Science and a Master's Degree in Education. After graduation Ray and Donna moved back to Martin, KY where Ray began coaching little league baseball. He became a teacher at Martin and then began coaching basketball and football. He was instrumental in starting the Junior Pro Basketball program in Martin where it is still active today. After his 2 kids were born Ray began his 32-year career on the railroad. Ray remained very active in all the sports and activities of both his children and grandchildren and after retirement, he returned to coaching football locally for the Village Football Association for several years, as well as serving on the Board of Directors. One of Ray's favorite pastimes was playing golf. After retirement he kept a standing tee time several days a week with several of his close friends. He was a member of Honors Golf at the King and Bear/Slammer and Squire. Ray loved his Kentucky Wildcats Basketball. He watched every game and attended the SEC tournament yearly. He and Donna would plan vacations that matched up with UK's early season schedule. Ray could always be seen wearing his famous Kentucky hat. Whether it was Maui, the Bahamas or Cancun they were there. Ray was a proud veteran and twice served as president for the annual Vets 4 Vets program at the World Golf Village to raise funds to support the St. John's County veterans. Any time he saw a veteran out in the community he stopped what he was doing to shake their hand and tell them thank you. He was also a Mason and proud member of the El Hasa Shriners along with being a Kentucky Colonel. He has been a coach/mentor to young kids and adults alike his entire life. The purpose for Masons is "to make better men out of good men." And there are hundreds of young men who have become better versions of themselves after being influenced by him. Coach Ray will be missed greatly but his impact on the people he encountered will be felt forever.
